Two old panels into one 200 A service
ready for an EV and a heat pump

A former duplex with two meters and two 125 A panels behind a finished wall. In a three-day install we consolidated them into one modern 200 A service, sized on two years of meter data, with a 48 A EV charger and room to go fully electric.

1The challenge

A Beaches house converted back from a duplex still had two Toronto Hydro meters on the front of the house, two service risers and two 125 A panels framed in behind drywall. The owner wanted an EV charger now and a heat pump later, without paying for two accounts or building on aging equipment.

2What we did
  • Merged two years of hourly data from both meters, 17,472 overlapping readings, to find the true combined peak
  • Sized a single 200 A service: 4.68 kW (19.5 A) combined peak, so the EV charger, a heat pump and a battery all fit with no load management
  • Coordinated with Toronto Hydro to remove one account, both old meters and risers, and moved the new 200 A meter base to the side of the house, away from the front and the second-floor balcony
  • New 200 A, 60-space main panel with every circuit migrated from both old panels, arc-fault breakers on bedroom and living circuits, and a whole-home surge protector
  • Dedicated 60 A circuit in armoured cable to the garage, outdoor disconnect, and a Grizzl-E charger hardwired at 48 A
  • Three days on site, one planned outage, with the ESA permit, inspection and Certificates of Acceptance
3The result

One meter, one bill and one modern panel in place of two aging services. Even with an EV charger, a heat pump and a battery all running, the service sits near 55% of its rating.

The kind we would give before you commit a dollar of capital. Tap a question.

Can two meters and two panels be combined into one service?
Yes. It is common in houses converted back from duplexes. Toronto Hydro closes one account and removes the old meters, a new meter base is set, and the circuits from both panels move to a single new main panel, or the second panel becomes a subpanel.
Is a 200 A service enough for an EV charger and a heat pump?
For most Toronto homes, yes. Here the measured combined peak was under 20 A, so a 48 A charger, a heat pump and a battery all fit on 200 A with room left over. The answer for your home comes from your own meter data.
